Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the leading killer worldwide. CVD causes blockages in arteries. To prevent platelets initiating coagulation complications, physicians prescribe antiplatelet therapy such as aspirin and/or clopidogrel, but not all patients are compliant with prescribed dosing, and the degree of platelet inhibition may vary from patient to patient. To determine whether the regiment is effective, physicians have a number of platelet-reactivity tests at their disposal. Unfortunately, these tests are expensive, time consuming and burdensome for patients.
None of the platelet reactivity tests in the current market offer a simple and direct measure. There is a need for a quick, but effective test that can be performed at the point-of-care (POC).
The P.R.T. system uses proprietary technology to test the reactivity of platelets with the blood from a finger prick. The PlaCor system includes the reader and disposable cartridges. The cartridges have test chambers with a spring inside mimicking blocked arteries. The reader induces shear stress on the cartridge activating the platelets. The reader determines the clotting time and displays this time on the screen. Test results are ready within ten minutes.
The product obtained CE marking and we are in the process of refactoring to make it a true POC device. A reimbursement code already exists for the test and materials as well.
